Hon. Theresa Lardi Awuni Rallies Behind Flood Victims, Donates Relief Items to 2,000 Alogboshie Residents

Alogboshie, Accra | July 7, 2026

The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, Hon. Theresa Lardi Awuni, has intensified efforts to support communities affected by recent flooding, donating a wide range of relief items to residents of Alogboshie while pledging tougher enforcement against practices that contribute to perennial flooding.

Addressing residents before the distribution exercise on Monday, Hon. Awuni made it clear that protecting lives would remain her foremost priority, even if it came at a political cost.

She warned that indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and the construction of structures within waterways would no longer be tolerated, declaring that a strict enforcement regime would soon be rolled out.

According to the MP, the safety of her constituents is more important than electoral considerations. She stressed that she would rather lose votes than allow actions that continue to expose communities to devastating floods, adding that existing laws would be enforced without fear or favour to protect lives and property.

The donation formed part of a broader emergency response to support families whose homes and livelihoods have been affected by the recent floods. Beneficiaries received essential household and relief supplies, including:

  • 1,000 blankets
  • 500 bags of rice
  • 1,000 rubber basins
  • 1,000 rubber buckets
  • 100 boxes of cooking oil
  • 1,000 plastic cups
  • 1,000 plastic plates
  • 1,000 mosquito nets
  • 1,000 mattresses
  • Cash donations to residents in extreme situations

The relief intervention follows a series of engagements by Hon. Awuni with key government officials aimed at accelerating support for Okaikwei North. In months prior, she has been lobbying ministers and senior government authorities, including the Ministers for the Interior & Works and Housing, to assess the situation on the ground and prioritise the constituency in previous, ongoing and future government flood response efforts.

Residents welcomed both the relief items and the MP’s commitment to tackling the root causes of flooding, expressing hope that stronger enforcement of sanitation and planning regulations will help prevent future disasters.

As flood-prone communities continue to recover, Hon. Awuni has maintained that humanitarian assistance must go hand in hand with decisive action to eliminate the practices that place lives at risk year after year.
